Laura joined the Frederic Thomas USA team in the fall of 2010. She brings a wealth of experience from the classroom and the world of educational publishing. At Write Source (eventually a subsidiary of Houghton Mifflin), Laura did editing, permissions, indexing, writing and final production reviews. She ended her 15-year career there as a managing editor.
"I enjoyed the integrated approach at Write Source." Laura says. "The creative team worked together from concept to final books, producing award-winning writing handbooks that students loved. Now, I enjoy having input at all stages of the creative work at Frederic Thomas USA, producing books that kids and parents love."
Attending a one-room school fostered Laura's lifelong love of reading, writing and learning. She graduated from Luther College with majors in English and French. After earning a Master of Arts in Teaching at Northwestern University, she taught high school English in suburban Chicago and later some writing courses at the University of Wisconsin–LaCrosse. For a year, she and her husband worked at a retreat center in England. While her two daughters were young, she wrote feature stories for newspapers and magazines. She enjoys a family business that produces garments of praise, leads worship dance programs and shares in ministry events with her pastor husband.
When she wasn't riding her horse, Laura's favorite childhood books included The Bible Story series, My Friend Flicka, King of the Wind, Little Golden Books and The Illustrated Treasury of Children's Literature.
